JL3001 Firmware v1.2

Post by InsaneAudioSupport » Tue May 12, 2020 10:58 am

Insane Audio’s next software update is now available and ready for your JL3001! Version 1.2 fixes a bug in the Rock Cam app for recording video, adds support for certain OEM features and has various other tweaks. It also lays the groundwork for wireless Apple CarPlay which we will be releasing very shortly in a different post.

This software is already on all of our latest products that have been shipping, so the first thing we need to do is check to see if you even need this for your JL3001.

So, lets first go ahead and check your current build number. Go to Settings->System->About Machine->Build Number. The build number starts with "rk33990userdebug 9 PI" followed by a date code.

  • If your date code is 20200325 (March 25, 2020) then you already have this update. You’re good to go!
  • If your date code is something earlier then March 25, 2020 then you want this update.
  • If your date code is later than March 25, 2020, that means you are reading this in the future and you are on some newer version of our software that likely has all kinds of super awesome features. In fact, your Jeep probably drives itself. You should not apply this update.

To apply this software update -
  • There are two files you’ll need to download for this update. Right click on update.zip and save locally to your computer. Note that it is important to download this locally first to avoid data corruption. Also go ahead and download dmcu.img
  • You'll then need a blank microSD card formatted in FAT32. Copy the two files you just downloaded to that microSD card and properly eject it from your computer.
  • Next, you'll want to power up your JL3001.
  • Properly eject the GPS card by going to Settings->Storage and pressing the eject button on the right hand side by GPS. Then you can safely remove the card from the GPS card slot on the bottom left of your unit.
  • After you've removed your Insane NavEngine GPS card from the GPS card slot, insert the microSD card that you just put the necessary files on. Right away, you should see a dialog box asking if you'd like to update your software. Yes, please. We'd like to do that. But before you click on Install make sure you check the box that says wipe data and format flash
  • If for some reason the dialog box doesn't automatically pop up, you can also just go to Settings -> System -> System updates
  • Note that you can also follow the above steps using a USB stick. Just make sure it is formatted as FAT-32 and you’ll need to plug your media into the CarPlay cable to install the update.
The unit will go through and perform the software update. Please let it complete and don't turn anything off until its done. When the unit comes back up, we're going to want to take one more step.
  • Go to Settings -> System -> MCU Updates. It will ask if you'd like to install the package. Yes, please. We like packages. Go ahead and click on install.

Thats all there is to it! Your software is now updated. But before we are entirely done and dusted, there are a few minor things we'll want to restore back to the factory state.
  • Properly eject your SD card from the GPS slot and remove it. Put your Insane NavEngine GPS card back in.
  • To re-install Insane NavEngine, open up the file browser. Navigate to GPS->Insane NAVI->iGO then click on iGO.apk and follow the prompts.
  • If you'd like your koi pond wallpaper back, open the file browser. Navigate to GPS->INSANE NAVI->Additional_APK and click on Water Garden_1.6.4.apk. Follow the prompts to install. Then you can long press on the home screen and set the live wallpaper.
  • You'll need to open the bluetooth app, search for and pair to your OBDII adapter for your live engine data.
  • You'll want to re-configure the Torque app as well. Go ahead and open that up. Press the settings icon on the bottom left. Select Settings -> OBD2 Adapter Settings -> Choose Bluetooth Device. There should only be one listed so go ahead and select that. Note that there are also some general settings that you may want to change like "start in dashboard mode" which will allow you to immediately jump to your gauges when you press the Torque icon. These settings are in Settings -> General Preferences

We have all kinds of software updates in the works for Insane Audio's JL3001 so stay tuned for more! All Insane Audio customers get free software updates for life and we have a bunch of fun features that we'll be adding to this platform.

Pro tip - after you apply this update you may want to go to settings -> car -> extra settings and check the box to auto hide status bar. This will give you a bit more screen real estate. :)

Hey there,

We're Insane Audio and we are already way more advanced than Android Auto. We already do everything wirelessly. 😊

Just so you know, Insane Audio’s JL3001 runs Android natively. It is super cool as it allows you to download your own apps directly to your Jeep. This is a big deal. The ability to run your own apps makes Insane Audio’s JL3001 exponentially better than plain old Android Auto. You simply turn on your phones hotspot and let the magic happen.

By having the ability to download your own apps this is a game changer. We already support MILLIONS of apps and everything is wireless. Connect your phone via Bluetooth and turn on your hotspot and you have a fully connected android device in the dash of your vehicle with no restrictions. You can do everything from streaming YouTube videos to Google Earth for satellite imagery. None of this is possible with just Android Auto. Only with Insane Audio. This should put things in perspective for you: https://www.insaneaudio.com/PRODUCT_DAT ... _Graph.jpg

Android Auto only supports a small number of “Android Auto approved” apps that are physically running on your phone. Insane Audio, on the other hand, runs Android natively and supports MILLIONS of apps. You just turn on your hotspot and download apps directly. Any app. No restrictions.

The possibilities with the JL3001 are limitless. Here is the link to our product page that provides more details so you can learn more about all the awesomeness that is in Insane Audio’s JL3001: www.insaneaudio.com/jl3001

Thanks - I understand that and agree for the most part. What is great about Android Auto is the seamless way that I can have it read, and I can verbally respond to, text messages. I now there are work arounds like push bullet and such but I don't like the push bullet service.

Anyway - everyone is unique in their needs and your product does provide exceptional flexibility. I was just curious if you had wireless android auto support on your road map since you launched it for the iOS platform.

Gotcha. No plans for wireless Android Auto as this truly does limit things. Wireless Android Auto requires you to connect via WiFi which means you can't also use your hotspot. If you use wired Android Auto, then you can keep your hotspot on. That means you can toggle between zLink (the Andoid Auto interface) and Insane Audio's native interface as you please and still be fully connected. We think this is the best of all worlds. The reason we launched it for Apple users is, well, because there seems to be an entire group of users who only use CarPlay and nothing else and never plan on using Insane Audio's native interface. We think that isn't the best use of our product and these users are missing out on all the cool stuff, but hey. That's their perrogitive. Android users tend to be inherently more comfortable with our native interface and usually can't resist wanting to start downloading apps and customizing the system. At least thats been our experience.

If there is real demand and there are folks out there who really want wireless Android Auto then we can certainly add that to our feature list. We have an entire list of features that we are planning on releasing in future software updates and we tend to priortize them based on what we think folks will want the most. Right now we're working on all kinds of additional OEM integrations and porting IADialer over to the platform so you can voice dial outside of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay through the Goole Assistant. More to come on those soon. :)
