How to hear your messages and chats

Post by InsaneAudioSupport6 » Thu Jul 20, 2017 2:29 pm

Itching to read that new text, comment or other message while you're behind the wheel? We all want to stay connected with our friends. With an Insane Audio head unit, you can stay connected and still keep your eyes on the road!

Basic setup
Let's get started by having your head unit read every notification aloud. Go to the Google Play Store, and install Shouter.

Upon initialization, permit the app to access any information on your head unit. Then enable App Notification. This gives Shouter permission to intercept all your notifications.

Next configure Shouter to intercept notifications from all of your favorite social media apps and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, SnapChat, Skype and Microsoft Outlook. You'll need to go into each of these apps and ensure that they're notifying you of new messages or other useful information.

At this point, you're mostly covered to listen to all the chatter from your friends or followers! Of course, these messaging services require Wi-Fi in order to operate. If you have ample (unlimited) cellular data with your phone plan, then go ahead and set up a hotspot in your vehicle.

SMS forwarding for Android phones
Android phones have a high degree of customization, and if you have one, you can forward all your SMS text messages to your Insane Audio head unit. By now, notifications are configured to shoot out of your car speakers. Next, let's read aloud your SMS text messages, too.

Let's get your head unit ready to receive SMS messages. Go to the Google Play Store, and install Pushbullet on your head unit.

Image

Upon setup, choose a Google or Facebook account to authenticate with. Then skip the option to acquire notification access.

Image

Then return to Shouter and add Pushbullet among your list of selected social media apps.

Image

Your head unit should now be ready to receive messages from your Android phone. Next, get your phone ready to transmit SMS messages by installing the same [https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... et.android]Pushbullet[/url] app on your phone.

Image

Set it up using the same Google or Facebook account you chose for the head unit, and also grant Pushbullet permission to access all notifications.

Image

Then ensure that Notification Mirroring is on.

Image

We're only interested in mirroring SMS text messages. So, to prevent duplicate notifications from social media apps, you'll want to disable mirroring for those same apps you selected in Shouter. Tap on "Choose which apps to enable" and disable those entries.

Image

Finally, tap on "Send a test notification" and check that everything is set up correctly. You should hear your Insane Audio head unit say "Notification from Pushbullet...". At this point, you're ready to hear new text messages through your speakers!

Wrap up
Sometimes we need a little help reading incoming messages while we're driving, and we presented a solution that works for us. We learned that Shouter can take all your notifications from social media and convert them to audible speech on your head unit. We also learned that Pushbullet can forward your phone's SMS messages to your head unit as notifications, and therefore, as audible speech. Now step into your Jeep and enjoy listening to your Insane Audio head unit!

Did this work for you? Found another clever setup? Let us know!

Hi all Jeepers

I;m having trouble with Shouter. It downloaded and asked for permissions with no problems. Then it says it needs a TTS to work. There is an install button. When pressed, the ap shuts down. Does anyone know the fix for this?

It looks like the app developers need to update their software. No worries. You can install TTS manually from the Play Store:

Google Text-to-speech

Install that, and then Shouter will stop asking you for it. Then you can go to Voice settings > Text-to-speech settings, and configure the speech engine to your liking.
